Track down peddlers and drug mafia to minimize rising graph of drug addiction in Kashmir:  Hashmi

SRINAGAR: On the eve of International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking 26 June 2022 eminent social activist Syed Karar Hashmi has expressed deep concern over the rising drug addiction in Kashmir added that drugs in the valley should be investigated and confronted from the root, and it should not be dealt with superficially.

Addiction is a difficult disease, and it is difficult to treat, but by controlling it, many social problems such as divorce, family breakdown and crime can be prevented. Drug abuse does not necessarily mean the use of drugs such as cocaine, hallucinogens, cannabis, hypnotics and opiates, but also prescription drugs such as painkillers, sleeping pills and sedatives.

There is growing concern about the growing number of substance abusers around the world following the increase in crime and death rates, especially among young people and adolescents in schools and universities, who have become addicted to drugs as a result of insufficient knowledge and information. On the other hand smuggling and illegal cultivation of narcotics, crime, violence,  conflict and terrorism are other challenges to deal with.

These problems are very frightening, but we can all take action and play a role in solving them. More than anyone, policymakers and then citizens, parents, teachers and young people can work hand in hand to prevent drug abuse and help advance the goals of sustainable development.

Hashmi further added that the best tourist spots like Mughal Gardens, Dal lake, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam are increasingly becoming favorite havens for drug addicts in Valley. Lauds the role of Jammu and Kashmir  Police in dealing with drug addiction in the valley, but it is necessary for all members of society to show their readiness and effort in preventing drugs and fighting this ugly phenomenon. All people in societies must work with full determination to fight against drugs to prevent its entry.

Karar Hashmi said that one of the major reasons in rising graph of drug addiction in societies is silence of responsible people and enlightened citizens over such a menace has failed us to combat drug addiction in the valley. The ground realities and information of young people addicted to drugs are harmful and destructive for religion, faith, honor, independence and all aspects of society. Reacted over opening of new liquor shops in Valley, Kashmiri based activist in Iran Syed Karar Hashmi further said that statistics show that ten thousand people are killed by liquor and only one is killed by a mad dog; yet we shoot the dog-and license the liquor. It is not good to see everything through the prism of revenue, but GOI should take decisions which would safeguard our youth and future generation.

“We need to unmask those actors who are running this drug racket in Kashmir. Taking drugs is not only a great wastage of money but also causes ulcers, stomach cancer, neurological and digestive disorders and liver ailments. On Contrary drug addiction are globally condemned by all sane religions of the world so need is to fight against drugs with full force. Need of an hour is to allocate sound and effective investments in families, schools and communities in relation to drug prevention,”  Hashmi added.
