Student organizations intensify protests for Central University

“GGM Science College, SPMR College of Commerce, MAM College, GCW Gandhi Nagar, GCW Parade, Evening College MAM and Evening College GGM Science College students boycott classes”.

Hundreds of students representing various bodies, besides political and non-political organizations, jointly took to the streets and intensifies protest demonstrations over shifting of Central University from Jammu to Kashmir.

Raising anti-government slogans, students of Government College for Women took out a procession demanding setting up of the Central University at Samba where the land has already been identified for it. ''The government should consider our demand. The University cannot be shifted to Kashmir when the Central Government has allotted it to Jammu,'' Preeti Choudhary, President, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Women Wing told reporters. She however, alleged discrimination with the people of Jammu and said that the policies on which the government is working was meant only to appease Kashmir region. Meanwhile, hundreds of students of Degree College Samba under the banners of various organizations, including Jammu Justice Movement (JJM), Jammu Joint Student Federation (JJSF) and ABVP jointly protested against the government and blocked the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway. Students from different groups this morning blocked the busiest Jammu-Pathankot National Highway, thus bringing the vehicular movement to a standstill for around one-hour. However, students dispersed later after shouting anti-government slogans and demanding setting up of Central University in Jammu. “We did not demand two IIM institutes, which have exclusively been allotted to Kashmir, then why two Central Universities as Government of India has announced it only for Jammu,” students alleged adding that State Government is adopting discriminatory attitude in a bid to create wedge between two regions.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere was highly volatile and surcharged today over the issue of Central University, as the students of GGM Science College, SPMR College of Commerce, MAM College, GCW Gandhi Nagar, GCW Parade, Evening College MAM and Evening College GGM Science College boycotted their classes under the banner of Jammu Justice Movement (JJM) and came out of their colleges led by JJM leaders and raised anti-government and pro-Central University slogans.

In GGM Science College, the classes were boycotted under the leadership of Sahil Choudhary JJM activists. JJM leader Ranjit Sharma addressed the protesters and laid emphasis on the unity of the students.

In SPMR College of Commerce, classes were boycotted under the leadership of Sumit Gupta, Ashutosh, Sanjay Sharma and students were addressed by the JJM leader Sunil Sharma. He said that the discrimination with Jammu cannot be tolerated and we are ready to fight against the anti-Jammu policies of NC-Congress Coalition Government.

In MAM College protesters were led by JJM activist Thakur Virender Singh and JJM President Mr. Pushvinder Singh Manhas. While addressing they said that it is the purely student movement which is free from any political interference.

They appealed common people to join hands with the student community and warned the administration to refrain from making confusing statements regarding the Central University.

In GCW Gandhi Nagar girl students were led by Urvashi, JJM activists and the protesters were addressed by Pratap Singh JJM leader. He said that the women power is the society’s power so they should come out in large numbers to strengthen the movement for the Central University establishment in Jammu. He asked the MLAs to raise their voice in the Assembly for the restoration of Central University in Jammu. In GCW, Parade the classes were boycotted under the leadership of Supriya Bhat, Abhay Sharma, Dikshit Sharma and the protesters were addressed by JJM leaders and asked to remain united for the cause of Central University.

Meanwhile, the Dharma at the Shahidi Sathal of GGM Science College started by the JJM establishment of Central University in Jammu entered into the 6th consecutive day today. Other JJM leaders present on the occasion include Arun Jamwal, Umesh, Bhupinder Singh, Dalbir Chib, Rahil Rajput and Sandeep Manhas.
