J&K State to have two Central Universities

Dy. CM holds meeting with prominent citizens, associations of Jammu

In a meeting held here under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Tara Chand which was attended by Legislators, representatives of various social, political, business and trade associations, prominent citizens and academicians, it was unanimously resolved that the Union Government should allocate two Central Universities for the state of Jammu and Kashmir, one to be located in Jammu province and the other in the Kashmir province.

The meeting also unanimously resolved and urged that the state government should take up with the Union Human Resource Development Ministry that two institutes, one an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) and another an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), which are both prestigious institutions be allocated to the state of Jammu & Kashmir, one to be located in Jammu province and other to be located in Kashmir province.

It was decided that MLAs of Jammu province would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah at Srinagar next week.

The meeting which lasted for three hours till late last evening in which all those present expressed their views also unanimously resolved that the state government should urge the Union HRD Ministry to direct the Vice Chancellor appointed for the Central University to suspend his further activities till a final decision is taken on the two Central Universities.

Minister for Industries and Commerce Mr. Surjit Singh Slathia, Minister for R&B Mr. G. M. Saroori, Political Advisor to Chief Minister Mr. Davender Singh Rana, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Dr. Pawan Kotwal, IGP Jammu Zone, Mr. Ashok Gupta were also present on the occasion.
