Conference on higher education begins at Srinagar

A 2-day Conference on “Higher Education in Changing Scenario-Challenges and Prospects” took off at Government College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar today. The conference is sponsored by Kashmir University and organized by the Women’s College.
The Conference was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi. Former Vice Chancellors of University of Karnataka and Orissa, College Principal Mr. Zeenat Ara, all Principals of Valley Colleges, its Faculty members and a sizeable number of students attended the Conference.
In his inaugural address, Prof Riyaz Punjabi emphasized the need for further improving and strengthening the basic infrastructure in all the educational institutions for achieving quality education which could enable the students compete at the national level. He said the institutions of higher education hold a pivotal position and contribute in a big way in overall progress of any society and is treated governing factor for making the best use of its human as well as physical resources. He said that Government has to equip the teaching staff from primary to varsity level to obtain better educational results.
Expressing concern over poor performance of students in mathematics and science subjects, Prof. Punjabi said that until all facilities are made available to the students, no headway can be achieved. He said that education should not be achieved for earning money only, but should be used as a beacon light for others. He said new subjects have been introduced recently in the University which should broad base the higher education spectrum. He urged the management of private institutions to pay due attention towards the science and technology in their institutions for achieving better results in the educational field.
